Indian Trails Camp - IKUS Life Enrichment Services

- This camp was specifically for people with all sorts of disabilities, including but not limited to autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and developmental disabilities.
- Provided assistance to campers in getting ready for the day and getting ready for bed, assistance in the bathroom, showering, brushing teeth, eating meals, and getting campers dressed and undressed if support was needed (for example, for a camper in a wheelchair we learned how to use either a hoyer or different transitions to get them in and out of their wheelchair, use the bathroom, and get into and out of bed).
- Being responsible for multiple campers with disabilities at one time required incredible multi-tasking and teamwork skills: ensuring that none of the campers ran away from the group, ate anything they were not supposed to or allergic to (especially campers with Pica), watching campers who were nonverbal for signs of having to use the bathroom or anything they might need help with, and ensuring campers were participating in activities and helping campers using hand over hand assistance with projects such as painting or other crafts.
- Learned how to professionally react to camper meltdowns, specifically from campers with behavioral issues, and come up with clever ways to get campers to cooperate and participate in activities. I came up with ideas such as sticker charts for good behavior, playing their favorite songs on the speaker, taking a short walk with a camper, taking a camper to the sensory room, and diverting the camper's attention to a new activity such as coloring.
- Learned how to use multiple kinds of equipment such as Hoyers, bedpans, and different types of wheelchairs
- Learned how to be patient and problem-solve in the face of difficulties
