I shadowed Christine Marchik, who is a General PA-C for the Hospitalist group at Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. She cares for patients on multiple floors, provides consults upon request, facilitates discharging and admitting of patients to other facilities, and oversees scheduling, patient assignments, and consultations for the Hospitalist group. 

Kurt Schlenther PA-C

(November 2021- December 2021)

I shadowed Kurt Schlenther, who is an Orthopedics PA-C for Kentucky Orthopaedics & Spine in Winchester, Kentucky. He operates out of the Winchester clinic, caring for new-problem, post-surgery, and consultation patients. He conducts physical examinations, orders and interprets medical scans, treats injuries, develops treatment plans, and writes prescriptions.

Theresa Cohoon Pathologist Assistant

(June 2021- August 2021)

I shadowed Theresa Cohoon, who is a Pathologist Assistant for Christie Clinic in Champaign, Illinois. She independently performs accessioning, dissection, evisceration, description autopsy, and histologic sampling, while providing oral descriptions via recording. She also maintains organization and labeling of specimens, storage and disposal of specimens, and digital files. 

Collaborative Biology Lab Research

(Assisted in research with Dr. Santollo’s laboratory in the Biology department of the University of Kentucky. The research involved understanding how gonadal hormones, specifically, estrogens, contribute to sex differences in fluid and energy homeostasis. Research was done on laboratory rats. Responsibilities included attending meetings, strategizing with other research assistants, cleaning, setting up, and assisting the laboratory supervisor in research by working with rats, feeding the rats, weighing the rats, and recording research.)

Personal Biology Research

(Conducted a personal research study, wrote a research paper, and gave a public poster presentation to the entire University of Kentucky Biology faculty and students in the Fall of 2019 at Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building. The research paper was titled "The Beef on Vegan and Vegetarian Diets Versus Omnivorous Diets: A Review of the Bacteria Found in Human Gut Microbiota From Dietary Changes" and was submitted to Frontiers in Nutrition.)

Responsibilities included leading a group of 10 new members in the sorority through guided exercises, informational sessions, and teachings to allow them to get acclimated to the sorority.)

Responsibilities included attending teaching sessions and clinics run by medical personnel, working in the ENT, Mother and Baby, and Emergency Room departments at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, offering free medical services to the community on the weekends, and running oral, hand, and feminine hygiene clinics for local grade school students at their schools.

Volunteered at two local elementary schools with responsibilities of speaking Spanish while interacting with children and parents, teaching English to elementary students, as well as painting classrooms, rebuilding school buildings, bringing new school supplies, and organizing activities for the children.
