Summary

My Name is Hannah Howe. I am a senior at Shoshoni High School and I am a statistic. I am one out of 110 babies born with congenital heart defects. I was born on June sixteenth at 7 pounds and 2 ounces. My condition went unnoticed while I was a fetus. My condition included; Pulmonary stenosis, transposition of the aorta, ventral septal defect, atrial septal defect, small left ventricle, and patent ductus arteriosis.

I have heard the same story for as long as I can remember and can recite it from the heart. I would sleep for 20 minutes, eat for 5, and repeat the process all day. Although after being born, I wasn't gaining any weight. My mother begged my pediatrician that something was wrong. At my two-month checkup with the pediatrician, my entire body turned the “color of a ripe plum.” The pediatrician took me from her arms, laid me on the table, and listened to my heart. He shook his head and muttered, “I still don’t hear a murmur.” From there I was rushed to the hospital. I was later flown to the Children's Hospital of Colorado. I was two months old and had a BT shunt placed to allow my blood to circulate through my heart and lungs and back out to my body. At six months I had my first of six open heart surgeries for complete repair with a prosthetic vessel and valve.

All though my scar is very defined and usually the first thing people notice about me, I don't let it tell my story. Growing up socially I was different with my condition. I was never as fast as the other kids or as athletic and I was seen for what I couldn't do. As I got older, I learned more and more that I am not my condition. I am kind, caring, helpful, and have a strong work ethic. Spending a lot of my time in the hospital is a big consideration as to why I would like to go into the nursing field. Helping other sick people become better or being able to reassure them that their diagnosis does not mean they get to choose or change how they live their lives. Helping others has always been one of my strongest characteristics and I would like to put that forth into my future career. Another factor in choosing the healthcare field is the women I'm surrounded by. My mother and my older sister are both registered nurses. I have watched my mom and sister take care of people often more than they care for themselves. I have seen the way that nurses can positively affect people. I am incredibly hard working strong independent person. Im know to be so incredible kinda and respectful person. I would say i am a great person to work with and people tend to in joy working with me. I believe I have always known i would get into the medical filed because I loves to help other and I always putting others before herself.
