Duties and responsibilities:

These rounds were conducted to evaluate changes in previously admitted patients, review those who had been discharged, and provide treatment to people with mental health conditions with coexisting physical conditions.
  • Ward rounds, which involved people with a mental health condition being assessed, diagnosed, and reviewed by doctors (psychiatrists) as I watched, listened, and learned about new conditions. Ward rounds were done to determine changes in previously admitted patients, to review those who were discharged, and to give treatment to people with mental health and other physical conditions.
  • Forensic ward rounds were done primarily for the mental health clients who had committed criminal offenses due to mental vulnerability and are in the mental facility because they have committed a crime. I was taught the different procedures for working with forensic patients, especially if a case has been filed against them.
  • Assess different clients and gather background information on them, including their awareness of their condition, the final event that led to their admission to the hospital, and the number of times they have been admitted. This information will be used to develop an intervention plan to manage the situation.

During the eight weeks of field attachment, I was required to design the group therapy sessions and conduct the activities designed. We made various presentations on several topics, including gratitude, self-compassion, the art of letting go, and happiness. All of these were carefully designed to help rehabilitate and motivate the clients in the alcohol and drug unit toward change.
  • I wrote reports on my assessments of different clients, including all the information about the session and the intervention plan. I also wrote reports on the group sessions I had at the alcohol and drug unit.
