Boatswains Mate 3rd Class

United States Coast Guard
01.2020 - Current
  • Graduated from Coast Guard Training Center Cape May on March 18th, 2020. I graduated without reversion (75% of recruits are reverted). My company K-198 was awarded the Coast Guard award, given to only 10% of the companies in the past 234 years of the Coast Guard have been awarded it.
  • I passed all standards required for Boatswains Mate A-school in late 2020.
  • I quickly passed all certification requirements for Boat Crew Member on the 29 foot Response Boat small; learning basic competencies in seamanship, first aid, navigation, and crisis management. I also quickly qualified as a Boarding Team Member, learning basics in maritime law enforcement. I also hold a Watch Stander qualification where I respond to distress calls over the radio.
  • I volunteered for several deployments, including Burlington, VT in 2021, Alexandria Bay, NY in 2022; and Marquette, MI in 2023 where I participated in over 400 law enforcement boardings and over two dozen successful search and rescue cases.
  • One such notable case occurred in Marquette, when five boaters signaled to us they were in danger. Once on scene, it was apparent the engine had caught fire and the fuel lines had not been shut off. They had just put 250 gallons of gasoline in it, and we made the call to get them off without trying to contain the spreading fire. Moments after we pulled away the rest of the ship was consumed by the flames. The case resulted in the saving of all five lives.
  • Assisted corporate or private vessels in distress during maritime rescue operations.
  • Learned to operate new technology systems and procedures through instruction, simulators and models.
  • Navigated vessel routes and used navigation equipment to verify accuracy of calculations.
  • Consulted maps, weather reports or navigation equipment to determine and direct ship movements.
  • Towed and maneuvered vessels in harbors and open seas, communicating movements to passing vessels.
  • Direct boat's speeds using specialized knowledge of local winds, water depths, points of interests and hazards.
  • Thoroughly inspected boats before each embarkment to verify maximum reliability.
  • Planned routes and travel speeds to meet scheduling and mission goals.
  • While at Station Marquette, I also acquired my Coxswain certification, which allows me to run search and rescue cases. I accomplished this within three years of earning boat crew, which is not typical of a reservist. Most reservists earn it within ten years.
  • In my time of service, I have been awarded two Commandant Letters of Commendation, the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Service ribbon, the Coast Guard Good Conduct Award, the Meritorious Teamwork Award (with distinction), the Pistol Marksmanship ribbon, and the Outstanding Unit Award.

Ministry Director

Ground Zero Ministries
01.2017 - 05.2022
  • Trained and supervised religious education of inner-city students. This included a weekly Monday night Bible study, where I studied and delivered the material for each night, as well as small group discussions for the Wednesday night gathering.
  • Kept program children safe and secure at all times with proactive monitoring strategies.
  • Prepared, coordinated and distributed information about yearly schedule of events.
  • Started, planned, and coordinated the yearly Christmas party: an indoor snowball fight that averaged 200 youth in attendance. Preparations included creating a schedule that incorporated different teams that were established at a sign-in area, designating volunteers to work the snowball field and adjacent areas, preparing the materials and setting up for the event, planning and coordinating other activities for students who desired alternate options (Christmas trivia, outdoor movie, fire pit and smore station), and preparing and delivering a Christmas message.
  • Started and planned the yearly student retreat: this included selecting and booking a location; creating a schedule, promoting it to students via social media and weekly announcements, coordinating with parents for permission slips, organizing transportation to and from the location, preparing material for group bonding and spiritual deepening, coordinating and planning meals and needed materials, and providing care and discipline for students.
  • Started and planned the Your Year Program. It was designed to celebrate students in their final years of high school and introduce them to the world of possibilities before them, encouraging them to dream beyond their current circumstances. This program included tutoring and themed nights for upperclassmen. This eventually evolved into one large block party, promoting many different vocational paths. Planning this involved working with the city to block off the street, working with businesses and organizations to provide tents, platforms, tables and food for the event, working with representatives of thirty colleges and universities from across the state of South Carolina, making sure they would be present for the event, working with recruiters from all branches of the military to ensure their presence, coordinating with local trade schools and work programs to ensure their presence, coordinating with local college ministries and military chaplains to provide next steps for spiritual well-being, creating and overseeing a schedule for the event, and coordinating with volunteers to ensure a safe and smooth night.
  • Led a fundraining campaign that raised nearly $22,000 for the organization.
  • Worked tirelessly with social programs like Department of Social Services to resolve conflicts with children in abusive homes.
  • Worked well in a team setting, providing support and guidance.
  • Managed time efficiently in order to complete all tasks within deadlines.
  • Identified issues, analyzed information and provided solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated a high level of initiative and creativity while tackling difficult tasks.
  • Led a small group of high-school boys for six years (volunteer job). Learned how to work with youth from complex backgrounds (most participated at first to fulfil parole requirements). This included acting as a mentor, making myself readily available for them, providing resolutions to complex solutions, and coordinating monthly group outings.
  • Organized games and activities for the weekly Wednesday night gathering.
  • Collected and maintained inventory for games, and maintained cleanliness and neatness of recreational areas.
