The Training Team was made up of an advocate, law enforcement officer and prosecutor and the team throughout the State of South Dakota training law enforcement officers, advocates, prosecutors, Judges and other professional. We trained the attendees on domestic violence, which included the
dynamics, current state laws, officer safety, and victim safety. We also trained on sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse and strangulation. The project was funded through the STOP Law Enforcement Training project through the State of South Dakota and OVW.
As part of the training team, I had the following responsibilities:
- I was the advocate part of the training team and would travel to various communities with the other team members.
- I was in charge of putting together the power points for the training team.
- I researched the current state and federal laws regarding the issues and incorporated them into the power points. I had to follow the statutes closely as they could change each year.
- I researched cases and headlines, both on a state and national level to be used as a training tool.
- I was in charge of updating the Law Enforcement Booklets to be distributed by the State of South Dakota to the attendees of the trainings.
- I provided training to the new recruits at the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation Police Academy.
The project administrator was assigned various office duties as different projects came up or as new grant funding was received.
In my position as project administrator, I had the following responsibilities:
- I researched, applied and successfully received an Indirect Cost Rate for the agency. This was the first time that the agency had requested the rate. I was in charge of reapply for the rate on an annual basis.
- I was in charge of managing the Transitional Housing Grant funding through the Office on Violence Against Women. The grant had seven (7) subgrantees which were in charge of managing the clients. In my position, I was responsible for managing the $255,000 budget which consisted of rent, deposits, support services, travel and a few other categories. I was in charge of making sure that the money was being spent according to the guidelines and the agencies were following the special conditions set forth. I also had to verify that all the documents were supplied by the agencies for reimbursement.
- I was the grants manager for a Special Appropriations grant which was funded through the Department of Justice. The grant budget was $172,765 and funded a wide range of services, including but not limited to funding for agencies to purchase equipment, travel for rural advocates and travel for state-wide trainings. As the grants manager, I was required to make sure that the appropriate documents were supplied to verify the money that was spent. I had to keep a log of all of the equipment which was purchased by each agency.
- I was the grant manager on the Grants to Encourage Arrest, which was a grant funded by the Office on Violence Against Woman. The grant provided three officers in two jurisdictions, a prosecutor piece and an audit specialist to oversee the entire audit process. The total budget on the grant was $737,133.
- I was in charge of the Domestic Violence Institute 2007, which our agency contracting to facilitate the conference with the State of South Dakota. The conference was a 2.5 day training and had over 300 people in attendance. I was in charge of contacting, contracting with and organizing all of the trainers, which included several national trainers. Also in my capacity of the project administrator on this project, I was in charge of the budget and making sure that we remained in the amount allotted; which the end amount was approximately $22,000 under budget. I had to take the registrations and reserve all of the rooms. After the conference was over, I was responsible for processing all of the travel vouchers and other expenses for the trainers as well as the attendees that were to be reimbursed for their expenses.
- I was in charge of organizing several other meetings throughout the year as needed. The meetings included executive board meetings, annual meetings of the membership, and several trainings provided by our office to the membership agencies. Many of the trainings we would invite national speakers and I was in charge of contacting, contracting with the trainers and making sure that the travel and lodging was in place.
