I rotate assignments among the various sterilization processing, surgical tray assembly, decontamination and clinic assembly and sterilization functions in a continually changing medical and surgical facility. My duties include extensive knowledge of the complete range of surgical instrumentation, surgical tray assemblies, clinic trays and manufacturer's requirements for cleaning, assembly and sterilization, disposable and reusable medical supplies, and patient care equipment.
I operate sophisticated microprocessor decontamination and sterilization equipment to include the operation of the Ethylene Oxide sterilization equipment and I must be aware of the danger surrounding the use of this toxic medical gas.
Operate all decontamination equipment in special area receiving items soiled with tissue, blood and body fluids and otherwise contaminated material.
Identify and receive contaminated surgical instrument sets, clinic trays, ward trays, endoscopic equipment, specialty carts, saws, drills and a variety of other items and devices from all areas in the medical center while prioritizing instruments and sets needed for surgery and clinics.
Assemble instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items and kits by selecting the appropriate items, trays, instruments and arranging them in the correct manner to insure appropriate sterilization and/or aeration.
Assemble complex instrument sets containing as many as 200 varied instruments which must be inspected for damage such as pitting, rust, cracks, berets sharpness, proper locking ability, jaw alignment, residual blood and tissue, etc.
Performs individual recognition of thousands of various instruments and am able to properly arrange them in a set to allow for sterilization of various instruments and is able to properly arrange them in a set to allow for sterilization, aseptic retrieval and arrangements, which allow for surgical use according to the sequence of events during a surgical procedure.
Process even the most complicated procedural sets containing unusual and minutely varied instrumentation such as the Fern Pop Vascular tray {200 instruments}, Bookwalter Retractor Tray and Eye Trays needing magnifying glasses to inspect the minute tips.
Efficiently schedules operation of sterilizers to permit cooling of and aeration of sterilized items prior to use by wards, clinic services, or the operating room.
Review, and signs, all sterilizer recording charts to verify the proper sterilization time, temperature, pressure, humidity, and sterilant exposure.
