Researched bone morbidities and deficits in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, as well as the effectiveness of different methods used to assess bone quality.
Worked with principal investigators to develop a protocol and consent form for a pilot study to characterize bone microarchitecture using HRpQCT in a small cohort of individuals with sickle cell disease. First study of its kind on human subjects.
Learned about the process of IRB approval through submitting proposed research protocol and consent form to the UCSF IRB.
Assisted in developing patient and control recruitment strategies.
Created a clinicaltrails.gov website for an ancillary study comparing the effects of two alternate daily doses of zinc in patients with sickle cell disease.
Conducted data-entry quality control procedures for a retrospective chart review dataset on hundreds of patients with SCD and Thalassemia.

Conducted a literature review around environmental risk factors and monogenic drivers in Nephrolithiasis. Investigated correlates between 24-hour urine abnormalities and specific genes, and identified gaps in the literature.
Completed the UCSF Designing Clinical Research (DCR) course. Attended lectures and completed readings on study design, causality, statistical tests, and internal v. external validity.
Learned the features of cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies, as well as their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Prepared a detailed critique of my mentor's planned study design. Delineated the strengths and weaknesses in the research protocol and potential sources of bias or random error that must be accounted for in the interpretation of results.
Delivered a final presentation on the literature review findings and critique at the end of the term.

Worked with senior scientists and statisticians to research external control arms (ECAs) and sources of bias in comparative effectiveness studies.
Focused on issues in comparing measurements of progression-free survival (PFS), especially difficulties caused by asymmetry in the lengths of assessment intervals across treatment arms.
Worked with simulation code in R to explore bias and build a framework to test potential correction methods. Investigated interval cancer distributions to find key statistics to generate more realistic “true” progression times for PFS simulation in R.
Digitized graphs from the literature illustrating interval cancer trends to incorporate them in simulation code.
Created a poster and presented work at the 2022 Janssen R&D Summer Intern Research Symposium.
