I am able to adapt in any setting and complete multiple tasks due to my past experiences. My volunteer work is crucial to my work ethic and has improved my skills with communicating throughout the years. These are all essential building blocks of how to effectively work in healthcare in general.
Care For Community is a non-profit organization that I created for low-income communities. In Houston I was aware that multiple families could not provide basic necessities for their kids. This organization was created to deliver basic resources like food and water to local schools so the communities around them can benefit from the items we are bringing.
I was able to work under Dr. James Willerson (Former President Emeritus at the Texas Heart Institute) day to day tasks of being a Cardiologist and guide patients on what they need to do for their health. Dr. Willerson was my grandmother's Doctor and he was the sole reason as to why I was even interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. Throughout the duration of this internship I was able to listen and hear the process of Dr. Willerson diagnosing these patients. I was able to take notes of the specific steps that he made with each patient meeting.
This internship experience was an opportunity that I earned from my club called Black Health Professionals Organization (BHPO). This was a shadowing program where I got to see a doctor operate their day to day schedule in a clinic. I personally chose a Cardiologist to shadow since Cardiology is my main interest when it comes to the medical field. For a month I received so much knowledge from how a Cardiologist approaches each patient and what exactly they suggest to these patients to improve their health.
