Work History
Volunteer
6 Months- Assisted in coral restoration projects through coral propagation and managing spread of biological contaminations
- Measured salinity, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium within each water sump, and curated solutions to offset inadequate levels
- Prepared feedings for various marine animals, including fish, eel and invertebrate species
Mussel Propagation Intern
3 Months- Assessed and collected gravid ffemale mussels within various freshwater systems throughout Virginia
- Monitored mussel glochidium survivorship and larvae development using microscopic observations, quantitative analysis and data entry
- Developed a strong understanding of a mussel’s life cycles, including their species-specific reproduction strategies, glochidium parasitism on host fish, and larval development stages
- Monitored water quality of pulse-flow tanks, Recirculating Propagation Systems, and AHAB tanks
Student Intern
1 Year 7 Months- Used molecular DNA sequencing techniques, such as gel electrophoresis and PCR, to map the genetics of understudied invertebrate species endemic to Palau
- Worked comfortably and regularly with pipettes, microcentrifuge tubes, mixing reagents, general QA/QC performance, media preparation
- Surveyed freshwater, marine and terrestrial ecosystems within Palau for biodiversity assessment and collecting data on endangered molluscs
- Collaborated with the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) and other scientists to update the conservation status of endangered species and species vital to local fisheries
