  • I am currently a mechanical apprentice at Greif I am two years into the four year program with all of my schooling that was required is finished.
  • Our job on a day to day basis changes with the work scope, anything from welding, pipe fitting, machining or millwright work.
  • We usually have department shutdowns every two weeks to travel to one of the five departments at the mill to do jobs as needed, whether it be changing a roll in one of the machines or rebuilding a pump or agitator in one of the many chest around the location.
  • Boosted equipment longevity by performing preventative maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines.

  • Our job on the extraboard is to cover all vacancies and call outs as needed.
  • The extraboard covers all bottom jobs of the five departments in the mill, this means being on call 24/7 and expected to come in to fill the shift when called in.
  • I worked the bottom jobs for over two years before being placed on an assigned shift on the paper machine, my jobs on the machine included Utility, which included cutting cores to the correct length for he winder to run, cleaning up after a hayout of the machine or the winder, getting the supplies from the store room as people needed, running the in house crane to transfer the reels of paper from the dry end to the winder, housekeeping after every shift. I also would set up to scales, Winder B and Winder A. Scaler would measure and weigh the rolls that the winder kicks out and putting the correct shipping label on the finished product. Winder B is in charge of making sure the correct cores are going into the winder and assisting the winder A as needed. Winder A is in charge of starting and stopping the winder, setting your slitters to the correct length that the customers desire and making sure that all the rolls appearance is sufficient, as well as setting up the trim sheets to be ran that day.
