  • Operated pumping engine to direct water pressure in hose and nozzle for most efficient operation.
  • Ensured all fire apparatus were fire ready, meaning; full fuel tank, all hand tools/ chain saws were in acceptable working order, full water tank, PTO, or Auxiliary pump is running well, all required equipment is in place and at hand, and an adequate MRE and drinking water supply were stowed on engines.
  • Spun and reported weather to crew boss or division supervisor using kestrel or sling psychrometer. Meticulously utilized hand tools in line construction. Safely and effectively used the Pulaski to chop small trees and line compromising or overhanging limbs, utilized grubbing end to locate and chop shallow roots to prevent underground fire spread or to dig extensive cup trenches to prevent the rolling of burning material across the line. Ensured safe distances between firefighters constructing the line, called out, made known, and reported any hazards to supervisors, and flagged when necessary. Detected smoldering materials using sight, sounds, smell, and touch. Effectively mopped up hot spots utilizing hand tools, backpack pumps, and small hose lines to extinguish hotspots and eliminate any chance for flare-ups.
  • Instilled proper chain saw etiquette, and skillfully applied chain saw use in line construction. Efficiently cut and thinned brush to allow hand crew access, fell hazard and healthy trees, brushed fire roads and hiking trails. Performed chainsaw rehab in the field as well as in camp, this included; cleaning air filters, tightening and replacing loose or broken chain brakes, fixing pull cords, sharpening teeth on chains and cutting edges, replacing worn sprockets and drums, lubricated inner bearing, and filed down burrs on the bar.
  • Served as a lookout for fire crews working in dangerous topographical areas, monitored and reported fire behavior and weather. Reported any flare-ups or spot fires that could compromise crew safety. Ensured 10 firefighting orders and 18 watch-out situations were being considered, and that LCES was in place. Recognized threats to control line such as extensive fuel load build-up, dead and down near line, or even sharp banks or turns. Implemented tactics such as widening brush cut to prevent radiant and convective spotting or slop over, widening doglegs, and spreading of unburned fuel into the green. Instilled safety procedures when working around vehicles, helicopters, small and large aircraft, and bulldozers in smoky, chaotic, and noisy environments.
