Sergeants have many potential duties dependant on where they are assigned in the Institution. I am currently the Sergeant (a lead worker role) of the Special Management Housing (SMH) at the Oregon State Penitentiary. The SMH building houses our Mental Health Infirmary, Behavioral Health Unit and Disciplinary Segregation Unit. SMH units are the most volatile and difficult buildings/housing units to work in within the Oregon Dept. of Corrections. Much of my days are spent having conversations with AICs who are suffering with significant mental illness and/or Behavior pathologies that require highly developed listening and communications skills.
Oversight of Master Control Center, monitoring inmates, visitors, and employees for signs of suspicious behavior through direct oversight and CCTV. Check all AIC arrivals and discharges, ensuring that arrivals get dressed in and receive housing assignments and that all discharges have discharge orders, documents, etc. Conduct inmate counts in areas of the institution where AICs are housed or work. Oversee as a lead worker 3-10 employees per shift, including the performance of tasks and managing 500 plus AICs per shift. Complete daily work reports and delegate tasks to employees. Verify all prison visitors carried proper identification and had no contraband before entering the institution. Inspect housing cells and direct staff in completing in-depth searches for contraband. Coordinate responses to emergencies arising in different prison locations through the ICS model. Supervise dining hall, outdoor recreation area, inspection gates, and AIC housing units. I am currently a Sergeant at the Oregon State Penitentiary. My achievements include being an active FTO inside the institution and being trained to be an emergency OIC if the need arises, including how to do UIRs (and I have completed numerous UIRs from actual events), all duties related to the daily shift rosters, etc.
I am certified within the department as an instructor for CPR and First Aid, Krav Maga, a BCC Adjunct Instructor, and an In-service Adjunct Instructor. I am assigned regularly to teach in all of these areas. During the Wildfire Evacuation, where OSCI, Santiam, and Mill Creek were all transported to OSP to be housed, I served as an Assistant OIC and was very involved in the logistical planning and execution of the first stages of that event. I also volunteered to write all the Misconduct Reports (40 of them in total) for every assault that transpired during that event, spending over 80 hours investigating related video footage involved, speaking to witnesses, identifying every staff member involved, and collecting memos (from 4 different institutions). I worked with multiple STM Lieutenants coordinating Confidential Informant interviews and submitting all necessary evidence for each of those Misconducts to be adjudicated. Every AIC involved in initiating an assault was found guilty of multiple rule violations, including inciting a Disturbance. I was also involved in the preliminary Use of Force Reviews from that event.
Since its inception, I have been an OSP Facility Intelligence Team member. I have been a part of other iterations of facility intelligence teams in two institutions for most of my career. The position of Sergeant is a Lead Worker role. Sergeants control, direct, and monitor AICs within an adult correctional institution or satellite facility by regularly being assigned to the most critical posts and/or shifts. In the absence of higher-level authority, Sergeants are the ones to provide immediate direction in case of emergency. They are assigned administrative duties and responsibilities in maintaining the security of the institution or facility. The Correctional Sergeant is the third level of a three-level security series. It is distinguished from the lower levels by the regular assignment to the most critical posts and/or shifts which require a higher level of judgment, increased technical knowledge, and more proficient skills resulting from extensive training and experience.
I graduated with honors from BCC and was awarded the Force Skills Award. As a Correctional Officer (and as a Correctional Sergeant), my responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining order within the institutions and enforcing rules and regulations while providing care to ensure safety and security. At the center of all the work that staff engages in at each Correctional institution in Oregon is the Oregon Accountability Model (OAM). The OAM states that we work to hold Adults In Custody (AICs) accountable for their actions to reduce the risk of future criminal behavior. Additionally, we ensure that AICs are orderly and comply with agency guidelines and standards. We also monitor AIC activities and supervise AIC work assignments depending on our assignment areas. Duties include cell checks and searches of AICs and their living quarters for contraband, settling disputes, and enforcing progressive discipline are basic security practices performed regularly. As security staff, we observe, inspect, and report safety, sanitary, fire hazards, and other potential risks and areas of operational concern.
Personal Trainer for 30 clients. I handle every aspect of the business, including but not limited to sales, management, execution and delivery of services, accounting, etc. I design strength and conditioning programs to meet client needs and achieve client goals. Programming included working with Doctors, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists that had safety considerations for people with disabilities or with medical concerns.
I ran all the day-to-day aspects of a health and fitness-centric DOT COM, including Web development, payment processing, sales, ordering, marketing, etc. I also ran booths at trade events like the Arnold Sports Expo in Ohio.
Duties included but were not limited to sales team management, hiring, and firing, and I also have extensive experience in training and developing personnel. Responsibilities also included marketing, finances, and every other part of leadership and management of the organizations and the people involved, both employees and volunteers. I have a proven track record of success with over 20 years of experience in leadership and management. Sometimes I had to work a full-time job in the marketplace in addition to the full-time roles I held in the nonprofits. Other times my work for the nonprofits was also my full-time job. Dates will show overlap.
I was the First Area Manager ever to be awarded three stores to manage. Met or exceeded sales goals consistently. Ran all three stores, including scheduling, training store managers and associates, ordering supplies, etc. I directed large volumes of professional interaction with customers/potential customers, including daily concerns or complaints.
Customer Service, contractor sales, and inside/outside sales of an extensive catalog of Tile and Stone and supporting products for commercial and residential uses.
I started as an assistant manager and quickly became the general manager, including opening a new store in the Salem area. I vetted and hired new employees, including administering pre-employment drug tests by collecting hair samples and sending them to the approved lab. I did all the schedules for a dozen or more staff, conducted training, customer service, accounting, etc.
At 20 years of age, a good friend and I were hired to run a locally owned pizza restaurant in Beaverton, Oregon. This location has closed though the local chain remains under new ownership. We managed every aspect of the operation, including training, scheduling, ordering, accounting, customer service, etc. We also did all the hiring and firing, including background checks, resume verification, and pre-employment drug screening.
