Work History

Investigative Services Unit Sergeant

North Kern State Prison
Delano, CA
06.2019 - Current

I am responsible for taking appropriate action during an emergency and for working on assignments as necessitated. I respond to all designated alarms or emergencies, per my post orders, or as directed by my supervisor. I am directly responsible for the identification and validation of inmates who are members, associates, dropouts, or have safety concerns from STGI and STGII inmates at North Kern State Prison (NKSP). I serve as the liaison between the institution and other agencies throughout the criminal justice network to facilitate the exchange of criminal information. I am a member of the California Gang Task Force (CGTF); therefore, I received gang intelligence training bi-monthly to ensure our unit, along with NKSP, is current on all gang trends, along with the criminal activities in which they are involved. I provide staff at NKSP with training on new developments, changes, and activities of STG, and coordinate investigations when members or affiliates of STG are involved in illegal activity within NKSP. While utilizing the Electronic Records Management System (ERMS), I review inmates’ case factors and develop caseloads for both the ISU and Institutional Gang Investigations (IGI) Units, comprised of inmates who are under validation review or have valid safety concerns, deemed to have complex case factors. I conduct investigations pertaining to inmate allegations of staff sexual misconduct, which fall under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) reporting protocols per the Department Operation Manual (DOM) Section 54040.1. Lastly, I assist the Internal Affairs Lieutenant in conducting investigations of staff members, including fact gathering, interviews, and providing the Office of Internal Affairs (OIA) and Allegation Investigation Unit (AIU) required documentation.

Investigative Services Unit Officer

North Kern State Prison
Delano, CA
07.2015 - 03.2019

Under the direction of the Investigative Services Unit (ISU) Sergeant, I provide institutional security through frequent, irregular searches and security inspections, with the primary intent to alleviate security hazards and provide guidance to all personnel within the institution. ISU acts as an emergency team, providing initial pursuit during escapes, and responds to other urgent situations within the institution as required. I assist with the collection and preservation of evidence relating to incidents involving serious injury, death, and other felonies, as required. I provide continuous in-service training in evidence collection, crime scene preservation, and any other classes as necessary. ISU is responsible for auditing tool control inventories, lost tool investigations, storing, marking, and issuing of scissors. Replacement of lost or broken tools is authorized by the ISU, via memorandum, and coordinated with the institutional warehouse. ISU is responsible for conducting searches of inmate cells, dormitories, shops, recreation yards, grounds, and any other area as directed by the ISU Sergeant. I cooperate with outside law enforcement agencies and assist them, under the direction of the ISU supervisors, in investigations involving inmate felonious behavior prior to incarceration. Lastly, I conduct investigations pertaining to all inmate-on-inmate allegations of staff sexual misconduct, assault, or harassment, which fall under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) reporting protocols per the Department Operation Manual (DOM) Section 54040.1.
