While on deployment, at sea in the Saudi Arabian Gulf, I was attached to the USS Nicholson.  We were performing ship to ship boarding and inspection for any contraband the may have been headed to nations with terrorist connections.  I was the Engineman assigned to one of the small boats that carried the inspection crew from ship to ship.  During on of our operations the engine to our small boat snapped a v-belt that also ran the water pump for the engine.  We were in rough swells and loss of engine power could have over-turned the boat.  I immediately removed my laces from my boots and made a temporary belt that allowed to boat to return to the ship safely.
