Project:

• Develop and run an experiment to satisfy NASA-STD-5020B "Requirements for Threaded Fastening Systems in Spaceflight Hardware", specifying that calculations used to predict preload shall be substantiated by testing.

Description:

• Read published papers to determine precedent for testing
• Developed a list of potentially significant variables to be tested
• Designed experiment capable of of providing sufficient data for each variable while minimizing cost using MiniTab statistical software
• Located and contacted suppliers of uncommon testing hardware (high capacity thru-hole load cells, 2219 aluminum sheet)
• Negotiated price of products to minimize cost

Impact:

• Developed torque-preload relationship screening test with an unprecedented number of factors tested (8+)
• Developed focused test plan for factors shown to have high impacts on preload in preceding studies
• Testing to begin soon - internship is ongoing

• Filled out inventory paperwork for incoming pipe shipments
• Confirmed inventory accurately reflected all shipped and received pipe
• Assisted employees with paperwork and communication with truckers
