Work History

Swain county rescue squad

Swain county
Bryson City, NC
06.2024 - Current
  • Very similar to the fire departments responsibility’s, the rescue squad has more of a focuse on EMSs, medical triage, vehicle extraction, river rescues, and search and rescue.
  • Continued responsibilities for managing and maintaining equipment, tools and vehicles, but a larger array of them. The rescue squad is trusted by the public with large off road vehicles, boats, dirt bikes, and ambulances.
  • Being a newer member of the the rescue my main responsibility is to focus on training, and learning from the senior memebers of the squad. Where ever I end up finding a job, I look forward to transferring to a new unit, and continuing my education and expanding my certifications!
  • Operated equipment and machinery according to safety guidelines.
  • Managed inventory and supplies to ensure materials were available when needed.

Bryson city fire department

Town of bryson city
Bryson City, North Carolina
06.2008 - Current
  • As the safety officer, my job once on scene, was to survey the entire area and identify and predict where the safety issues are, or could arise from. Once I was on scene I was trusted with being the only person who could not be overwritten. Having the authority and final say on the scene of incidents was one that taught me a lot. And had to be handled very carefully in a close group like ours. I was working with some people many ranks higher then me, along with many more years on the department, with years of more training then me. It taught me more about leadership then any other experience I have.
  • Completed day-to-day duties accurately and efficiently. For example certain pieces of gear had to be checked daily for operational readiness, or equipment checks daily to insure all equipment and tools had made it back to its proper place. It was left on every crew member to insure all vehicles where properly gassed, maintained, and presented in a way the community could be proud of.
  • Contributed innovative ideas and solutions to enhance team performance and readiness.
  • Scheduling- made sure that each shift not only had the proper amount of personel, but also the right skilled crew that balanced ability and knowledge accross all shifts,
  • Worked successfully with diverse group of members from different departments, not only different fire departments, but from other police stations, public works department, from clearing a road of glass, to the safe passage of dignitaries driving through, or to accomplish training goals, to prevent safety issues to the public or other memebers
  • Learning the ability to stay calm under pressure is the number one skill this job has taught me, that I consistently use in everyday life. From being a parent dealing with cuts, bumps, breaks to managing my business on a Friday night after callouts and broken equipment. The ability to stay calm and focused not only help me make the right decision, but also makes it possible to execute that decision and see it through while also giving the other employees the confidence to see it through.
