My duties and responsibility’s as a New York State trooper were to enforce the vehicle and traffic laws of the State of New York as well as the laws pertaining to the New York State Penal and Criminal Procedure Law. My daily duties would often involve but not limited to conducting motor vehicle accident investigations, responding to domestic incident calls, conducting traffic stops resulting in DWI and/or drug arrests, criminal mischief investigations, larceny investigations, assault investigations, sexual assault investigations along with additional daily complaints.

Upon request from West Point officials I would routinely conduct K-9 health and welfare dorm checks of their cadets. As a member of the NYSP K-9 Unit I was assigned to the 911 World Trade Center search and rescue detail at ground zero.

During my ten year tenure as a uniform trooper and K-9 handler I have received numerous Letter of Commendations. Theses commendations include but not limited to being recognized for having high vehicle and traffic law violation actively, high penal law arrests, positive K-9 tracks for missing persons and fugitives as well as letters of appreciation from outside agency’s.

An example of a notable Letter of Commendation I received in December 2003 is as follows:

I responded to a report of an emotionally disturbed person at a residence in Orange County and upon my arrival, I located a distraught woman in the kitchen holding a knife in each hand. When I drew my weapon and instructed the woman to drop the knives, she kept repeating "suicide by cop" while retreating into the kitchen. While maintaining a dialogue with the distraught woman SP Middletown dispatched additional troopers for assistance. Upon their arrival I, along with two additional troopers utilized a piece of plywood as a shield and pressed the woman up against the kitchen counter. When the distraught woman still refused to relinquish the knives, I administered one half-second burst of OC spray which allowed the other troopers to take control of the woman and retrieve both knives from her.

Faced with what could have become a deadly situation, I and my fellow troopers chose to use lesser amount of force, placing ourselves in harm's way, thereby probably saving the life of a mentally ill person. I was commended for an outstanding job and recognized by the Troop F Major.
