I have been a BSN for 40 years. I have had a long and varied career. Starting after graduation, I joined the team at Magee Women's Hospital. In the NICU, I learned many skills. Eventually I became a member of the transport team, worked in the delivery room triage area, was assigned charge nurse, team leader and float nurse. My patients were medically fragile and premature infants. I became familiar with giving blood products, chest tubes and ventilators. I also became proficient with IV insertion, caring for chest tubes, and education for parents of the infants. In addition, I cared for infants and families that stayed for extended time periods in the NICU. Sadly, some infants died in my time at the NICU.
Some time later I began working in a school setting. I worked with children from 3 years to 21 years of age. First I was in an office seeing up to 50 children per day. these children had major chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease and seizures. I cared for children with mental illness, and learning disabilities.
Now I am working taking care of adults with intellectual disabilities. They have traumatic brain injuries, autism, Down Syndrome. Along with these conditions, they have many chronic conditions. Difficulty speaking, swallowing and personal hygiene and daily care is added to my duties.
All of these experiences have given me skills that I treasure.
