Before I encountered individual subjects as clients, I wanted to determine my attitude toward the field as a whole. That was my reason for becoming a volunteer. the young man with whom I worked on the alphabet card was starved for interaction and learning. Brett and I had met while I worked as teacher's aide in a special education class. Brett had taught himself to read on his own. He received no formal education in the public school. We were working on beginning algebra when his stepmother said he no longer needed extra assistance. I had not had any experience with special needs individuals before time in that classroom. My encounters with that group of people totally changed my ignorant attitude toward them. For the most part, those special needs students long to learn and acquire as many skills for living as is possible. I am devoted to helping as many of them as I am able.
