Additional Information

  • By: Wilson Rawls Billy Colman-The narrator of the story. A poor country boy with a dream and determination to get two redbone coonhound pups. Old Dan- The male redbone coonhound pup. The alpha pup brave and not hesitant to act, and he doesn’t let anything get in his way. Larger than Ann, wide, bold, and stood out more. Little Ann- The female redbone coonhound pup. Ann is very curious and always following in Dans steps. She always acts second. She is small, neat, and even. Setting-The dark hills and river bottoms of the Cherokee country. Their home was in a beautiful valley far back in the rugged Ozarks. There log house nestled at the edge of the foothills in the mouth of a small canyon, and was surrounded by a grove of huge red oaks. Behind the house one could see miles and miles of the mighty Ozarks. In the spring the aromatic scent of wild flowers, redbuds, papaws, and dogwoods, drifting on the wind currents, spread over the valley around the home. Below the fields, twisting and winding, ran the clear blue waters of the Illinois River. The rich bottom land near the river was studded with tall sycamores, birches, and box elders. The country was new and sparsely settled. The land was rich, black, and fertile. It all started on one thought to be ordinary day Billy Coleman finds himself at a Fishermans old camp ground. Billy finds an ad in a magazine about redbone coonhound pups for sale and saves his money up for two years to get his pups. The day comes when he has to make a trip to Kentucky to get his two pups. He trains the pups to hunt for coons and his work pays off. He enters Ann and Dan in a coon hunt. Billy wins the hunt and gives mama the money he won to help with the house. But one day Dan treeded a mountain lion him being trained not to let it go he doesn’t leave. Later he was attacked by the mountain lion and Ann has a minor wound and Dan has his life on the line. Later that morning Dan was pronounced dead and it took a lot of effect on Ann. They always eat together so Ann doesn’t eat without him for days and with the last of her strength dies at his grave. Then were a red fern grows between them. The Coleman family moved away the next day. Red Fern Legend-the old Indian legend about the red fern. How a little Indian boy and girl were lost in a blizzard and had frozen to death. In the spring, when they were found, a beautiful red fern had grown up between their two bodies. The story went on to say that only an angel could plant the seed of a red fern, and that they never died; where one grew, the spot was sacred. Vocab Words- waded~ I sacked my dog and waded the river. Frazzle~ If you ever scare me like that again I'll take a switch and wear you like a frazzle. Liniment~ Then she rubbed me all over with some liniment that burned like fire and smelled like a civet cat. Scold~ I had to scold old Dan to make him stop. Winced~ Mama took one look at the lifeless body and winced. I like how the book shows that A dog is only a part of your life but You’re a dog's whole life. It is a very detailed and heartwarming book to read. I like how there are many different emotions in the book. The author describes everything emotionally and tells the story very sympathetically.
