  • Environmental Management System (EMS)...Implemented a Plan-Do-Check-Act system following ISO 14001 guidelines. Developed conformance procedures and programs for base facilities by drafting an EMS Policy Statement, developing an EMS Manual, and obtaining approval of EMS Self-Declaration of Conformance. The EMS program was then maintained by tracking metrics and incorporating findings into the Pollution Prevention Program.
  • Hazardous Material Management Process (HMMP)...Performed training and oversight of the Air Force Enterprise Environmental Safety Occupational Health Management Information System. Performed assessments of HAZMAT storage areas and ensured that personnel updated their HAZMAT usage records. Rewrote and updated Hazardous Materials User's Guide. Worked with the Safety Official to ensure proper implementation of program.
  • Natural and Cultural Resources Management...Reworked the Integrated Natural & Cultural Resources Management Plan by incorporating data from recent Threatened & Endangered Species Surveys and Habitat Surveys. Created maps identifying areas of endangered species populations and denoting varying vegetative covers, and oversaw the development of a Management Plan specifically for the conservation of a European Union Listed Threatened species.
  • Contaminated Sites Management...Identified possible contaminated sites by performing initial site visits after reports from base personnel or contractors. Addressed potentially contaminated sites by engaging contractor assessments, overseeing their activities, and reviewing their final reports.
  • Pollution Prevention...Reviewed existing installation refrigerant inventories and interpreted applicable European regulations regarding the phase out dates of HCFCs in Europe to develop a priority list of refrigeration units, failure of which could impact the military mission.
  • Pest Management...Used standard Air Force software to track pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and physical control measures used on installations. Worked with the Grounds Maintenance department to develop practices to lessen chemical use, such as outreach to base residents.
  • Updated Installation Environmental Plans such as the Pest Management Plan, Natural & Cultural Resources Management Plan, Spill Response Plan, Pollution Prevention Plan, Hazardous Material Management Plan, and others as needed on a recurring basis.
  • Air Force Audit Program...Performed internal environmental site audits on various functional groups and was audited by external assessors on Environmental Management Programs.
  • Led presentations to squadrons about solid waste reduction, spill prevention, energy and water conservation, and the Environmental Management System.
  • Researched new technologies and methods to provide recycling recommendations. Promoted recycling and sustainable practices by consulting with squadrons. Collaborated with the senior leadership team to promote recycling and energy efficiency within the installations.

Staff Scientist

Stantec Consulting
03.2007 - 08.2009

  • Technical report writing including Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, Semi-Annual Groundwater Monitoring Reports, and Site Characterization Reports for Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
  • Obtained permits, such as Right-of-Way, and various regulatory permits for state and city agencies.
  • Assessed pollution levels by collecting and analyzing environmental samples of soil and groundwater.
  • Developed scopes of work with associated costs for each task associated with a particular project including in-house costs and subcontractor estimates.
  • Sought bids on projects from sub-contractors.
  • CERCLA projects including the installation of over 50 groundwater monitoring wells, soil vapor extraction wells, ozone-sparge wells, and dual-phase extraction wells at several Superfund sites and gasoline service stations.
  • Underground Storage Tank (UST) system removals at major oil company-owned-or-operated gasoline service stations. Coordinated with local city fire departments and the Department of Environmental Quality for these removals.
  • Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) semi-annual groundwater monitoring and sampling for volatile organic compounds and nitrates involving the use of passive diffusion bags and discrete interval sampling.
  • Conducted various semi-annual groundwater gauging and sampling events at several state Underground Storage Tank sites using grab and purge sampling methods.
  • Performed free product removal.
  • Was subject to a very comprehensive behavioral safety policy including developing site safety plans for each place of work no matter the duration of activity, leading site safety meetings with subcontractors, functioning as the safety lead on all field work, and continually looking for opportunities to ensure safe practices.
  • Drafted and submitted hundreds of state environmental compliance reports.

Environmental Scientist/Geologic Specialist

Western Technologies

  • Geotechnical laboratory testing including sieve tests and plasticity index tests.
  • Performed seismic refraction tests and percolation tests in the field then analyzed and interpreted the data.
  • NEPA based Phase I environmental site assessments for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Arizona Game and Fish Department, The City of Phoenix, and Wal-Mart. Work included proposal writing, project set-up, project management, environmental database research, endangered species lists research, historical reviews, interviews, site reconnaissance, and report preparation.
  • Logged soil lithologies by determining the presence and content amounts of sand, silt, clay, cobbles, boulders, or bedrock and defined the parent material from soil borings and rock cores in the field.
  • Managed field operations including environmental and geotechnical sampling using various methods including auger drilling, air-rotary drilling, rock coring, trenching, and hand auger sampling.
