Accomplishments

  • Student Relationships, Interacting with my students is a joy for me and developing positive relationships is a priority. I love to help students find their strengths and encourage them to pursue their goals. It makes me so proud to get positive feedback from students whether it is based on the content they learned or enjoyment they experienced class. Last spring, I was honored when a former student who has returned to Hutchinson to teach English at Buhler High School, named me as the teacher who inspired her to join the teaching profession. In an article written by the Hutchinson News about graduates coming back to Hutchinson to teach, she was quoted as saying, “She was a friend, a counselor, a mom and an advocate all in one. She always went the extra mile to make sure we were, first and foremost, happy and OK,”. This particular student had to endure a chaotic home life and it was so humbling to know I made a difference in her life.
  • Personal Finance Requirement and Credit Union Partnership, With help from colleagues in my business department, I submitted a proposal to add Personal Finance as a requirement for students graduating from Hutchinson High School. I was thrilled when the course was added to the graduation requirements for the class of 2022. Teaching in a district with a high poverty level has inspired me to implement the Dave Ramsey curriculum in our business department and apply to become a pilot school for the Real World Classroom (RWC) program. The RWC includes a unique lab/simulation that takes students through a monthly paycheck and allows them to make choices that have future impacts on their grade and class privileges. Our business department wants all of our high school students to leave equipped to be financially responsible and we are making huge strides to reach that goal. To expand our financial literacy efforts, we reached out to our business advisory board members to open a bank on our campus. Heartland Credit Union presented an ideal partnership with a central goal of educating our students. After working through some minor hurdles, we now have a fully operational branch on campus. Student interns are responsible for the daily operations as well as speaking to peer groups about financial topics. This has been a very positive addition to our high school and it makes me proud to see our students working as interns.
  • Accounting Program to Build the Profession (APBP), Since 2007 I have been part of a national effort to increase rigor and relevance in the high school accounting classroom. I serve as a training consultant with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to help teachers implement an accounting curriculum that is consistent with the needs and goals of the accounting profession. Through this advanced accounting initiative, the team I serve with has trained over 1000 high school business teachers. I love meeting other professionals who are as passionate about bringing what is best for students to our classrooms.

Honors And Awards

  • Kansas Teacher of the Year District Nominee, 2018-19, Served as USD 308’s district nominee for the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. It was a great honor to represent my school district. The most rewarding aspect of the program was the opportunity to visit other school districts in my region. I met so many wonderful educators and gained an even greater respect for the teaching profession.
  • Kansas State Bridge Award, 04/2011, Awarded the Bridge Award through Kansas State University for contributing to the bridging of high school and college accounting curriculum. This recognition was a result of being part of the training team for the Accounting Pilot and Bridge Program (APBP). Our training team has trained over 1000 high school accounting teachers to implement a more rigorous and relevant accounting program. The APBP program has been adopted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and I have continued to serve on the training team.
  • Davis Foundation Educator of the Year, 05/2000, This award is presented to one elementary, middle and high school teacher each year. Nominations are open to students, staff and parents. The winners are selected by a committee of community members who serve on the Davis Foundation board.
