  • Design electrical service extension, maintenance and system improvement projects.
  • Prepare drawings by hand or using computer aided design systems, GIS, and other methods; prepares, updates, and maintains maps.
  • Lay out transformers, pedestals, street lights, etc.; prepares work order with inclusive material lists.
  • Gather field data for use in design modifications and improvements to the distribution system such as sizes of conductors, amperage, location of transformers.
  • Assist with field changes in designs.
  • Perform basic surveying and staking; serves as liaison with developers as construction changes occur.
  • Determine pole sizes, size and strength of wire; calculates angle of pole and line tension utilizing specifications and standards.
  • Scan plans into system upon completion of drawings and converts to PDF file.
  • Meet with developers on site; check on contract work for adherence to plans.
  • Investigate requests for street lights.
  • Prepare work orders for field staff and create utility locate tickets.
  • Collect GPS points and coordinate with contractor collecting points.
  • Assist in promoting and coordinating installation of street lights and area lights; ensure adherence to town specifications; make decisions on location of lights; conduct audits of cable television and telephone attachments to the town distribution system.
  • Ensure design work is done to safety standards so work can be accomplished safely.

Electric Field Crew Supervisor

Town of Apex
01.2005 - 08.2015
  • Supervised and participated in a variety of skilled and technical tasks associated with the electric distribution facilities and lines.
  • Distinguished work from lower-level technician work by the supervisory requirements, including performance evaluations for crew members, and the independence of action in addition to performing technical work on primary high voltage lines.
  • Required the employee to provide on-the-job training, performance coaching and evaluation to technicians and apprentices. I have a considerable knowledge of the safety requirements and possible hazards involved in power line work. Independent judgment was exercised in determining the most appropriate methods and equipment when working with high voltage wires.
  • Required frequent on-call and callback responsibilities and stand-by work for emergency conditions. I was subject to hazards associated with electrical work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather as well as various storms, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses, confined spaces, poor ventilation, and oils.
  • Supervised and participated in the work of a crew of electric line technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the electric distribution system; assures that safety precautions for the crew and the public are being followed.
  • Trained and coached employees on the crew; conducted performance evaluations and provided input into disciplinary actions when needed
  • Installed primary and secondary electric power lines; operated a variety of heavy equipment including bucket trucks, line trucks, backhoes, excavators, trenchers, boring equipment and plows. Installed, repaired, and replaced overhead and underground lines and appurtenances; installed transformers, fuse cutouts, meters, switches, capacitor banks, regulators and reactors. operation of fault finding and locate equipment.
  • Participated and instructed lower-level technicians in the installation and alignments of power line poles; performed more complex work involving energized primary lines; stringed primary and secondary lines using special wire pulling and rigging equipment; attaches wire to insulators and cross arms, leg supports, insulators, lightning arresters, and circuit breakers Inspects work of subordinates and contractors for adherence to standards, productivity, and quality.

Electric Line Tech-Journeyman

Town of Apex
03.2000 - 01.2005
  • Performed advanced journey level technical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical lines.
  • Substituted for the field supervisor in assigning and inspecting work, assuring compliance with safety rules and regulations, and held a responsibility for the proper training of less-experienced co-workers.
  • Possessed a thorough knowledge of standardized techniques and practices utilized in power line construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • I was assigned to the service truck and worked as lead worker on the overhead and underground crew, also trained to work in substations identifying the equipment and how to operate and maintain it.
  • Required frequent on-call and callback responsibilities and served as primary on-call for emergencies.
  • I was subjected to hazards associated with electric power in both inside and outside environments and working in extreme heat and freezing weather.
  • I was exposed to various hazards such as working at heights, loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, confined spaces, poor ventilation, and oils.
  • Participated in the installation and alignment of power line poles; stringing primary and secondary lines; attaching wire to insulators and cross arms; installs, repairs, and replaces cross arms, supports, insulators, lightning arrestors, and fuse cutouts.
  • Operated bucket equipment to ascend to high wires, participated in making energized line taps, and connecting wires; handled energized aspects of the system independently.
  • Participated in the installation, construction, and repair of underground electrical systems by installing primary cables, secondary cables, and transformers; located trouble spots in the cable span, used fault finding test equipment, and took necessary measures to excavate and correct problems; determined whether equipment, such as a transformer, is faulty and replaced it.
  • Supervised other Electric Line Technicians, either in the absence of the Field Supervisor or on an on-going basis as operator of the service vehicle. Mentored lower-certified employees and trainees and provided on-the-job training. Monitored safety procedures for self and for crew members.
