Duties of a Lineman in the Electric Field
• Install power lines (over head) for electricity distribution
• Maintain and repair electrical lines to ensure steady power supply
• Climb utility poles or work from bucket trucks to access lines safely
• Inspect electrical equipment such as poles, transformers, insulators, and cables
• Restore power after outages, especially after storms or accidents
• Replace damaged wires or equipment
• Follow strict safety rules to prevent electric shock or injuries
• Use protective equipment like gloves, helmets, and safety harnesses
• Test lines to ensure they are de-energized before working
• Work as part of a team and communicate clearly during operations
• Assist journeyman linemen with installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines
• Climb poles and structures using approved climbing gear (as training allows)
• String, sag, and tension conductors and wires
• Install crossarms, insulators, transformers, and hardware
• Set, frame, and remove utility poles
• Pull and install underground cable and conduit
Safety Responsibilities
• Follow all electrical safety rules and OSHA regulations
• Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Maintain minimum approach distances from energized lines
• Ground lines and equipment properly
• Participate in job briefings and tailboard meetings
Equipment & Tools
• Operate tools such as digger derricks, bucket trucks, and hand tools (under supervision)
• Maintain and inspect tools, vehicles, and climbing equipment
• Assist with rigging and hoisting materials
Learning & Training
• Progress through apprenticeship levels by completing required hours and coursework
• Learn electrical theory, line construction standards, and system layouts
• Practice emergency response and rescue procedures
Primary Job Duties
• Assist journeymen and apprentices with daily work tasks
• Prepare and maintain the job site (setting up cones, barricades, and safety zones)
• Load, unload, and organize tools, materials, and equipment
• Hand tools and materials to crew members as needed
• Dig trenches or holes for poles, conduits, or foundations (by hand or with equipment)
• Operate basic equipment under supervision (e.g., hand tools, compactors)
