“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities” -Stephen R. Covey. Growing up in the Bay Area, I have experienced an immense amount of diversity throughout my life. I have been surrounded by many different cultures and ethnicities at school, work, and even through extracurricular activities. I find it crucially important that, as a future educator, I acknowledge each of my students' diverse backgrounds to ensure they feel entirely included inside the classroom and outside the classroom. As a white American woman, I understand that I need to strive to learn more about different cultures and ethnicities as I seek to create an inclusive teaching environment. Each student who walks through the doors of my classroom will bring in their own unique life experiences. Taking into consideration the ideals related to Funds of Knowledge, this will allow me to teach my students appropriately and develop relationships with them and their families. I will educate myself on their background to demonstrate my respect for the fact that my students exist as people with lives outside of school, and I appreciate that they bring these strengths in with them. I strongly believe that each child should feel loved, cared for, and safe in my future classroom. Students may come from different races and different cultural backgrounds. However, they will be provided with the specific support they need from me.
For instance, facilitating an activity based upon Funds of Knowledge where I ask my students to list items such as their family dynamic, race, religion, any traditions they may have, and favorite activities to do during the summer. I then would ask each child to share with the class, if they are willing, so that each student can understand their classmates' differences and understand that each child has a unique background. Yet, they show up to school each day just like everyone else. This will allow students to find comfort in each other as this Funds of Knowledge can reveal that students have common differences within their cultures and identities. Finally, once I have a deeper understanding of the backgrounds of my students, I can shift my teaching style to relate to them and cultivate a more inclusive classroom. Overall, this will allow me to build relationships with my students and their families alike, as their guardians and loved ones will see that I am providing their scholars with an inclusive, safe, and loving environment where their strengths lie in their differences from one another.

Dear Irene Hightower,
Motivation to contact you sprung from seeing the urgency that San Diego Unified School District needs teachers of the elementary school level. In the past several years, I have spent many hours developing my skills in all material related to being the best fit for the elementary grade level teacher position. Which leads me to believe that I am a great fit for this role. My personal goal is that I aim to make every child feel that they have the resources and knowledge to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.
I believe that creating relationships and connecting with students is one of the most important factors in shaping a students success within the classroom. I hold a positive outlook, patience, and strong communication skills which are needed for this position. I also feel that my abilities to manage effective classroom management and stay organized prove that I am a great fit. Being involved with SDSUD schools in the past couple of years, I understand the mission is to embrace individual students differences and understand each child is unique that walks through my classroom.
In terms of having my degree and teaching credential, I am experienced in teaching multiple subjects in all grades from T-K to Fifth Grade.
Being presented with this job, will allow me to reach my goal of providing students with the resources and environment for them to be successful inside and outside of the classroom. This opportunity will allow me to further my career in leading students to be the best versions of themselves. All in all, if there are any other information you are seeking please take a look at my resume for qualifications and my personal philosophy for the attitude I will bring to the classroom. I believe I am the type of educator you are looking for to fill this role. Please contact me for any additional information.
Best regards,
Jayden Schaible
As an educator, I strive to be knowledgeable in all content areas based upon the California State Standards. To further my students engagement and performance I am regularly looking back at lessons to see how I can better my teaching experiences. Below are examples and pieces of work/lessons that I have created based off content from the California State Standards. There are also statements of consideration attached to each. Please view the links embedded to further open the activities. Thank you!
1. English/ Language Arts
-Reading/ Spelling with Music Integration - Independently Made Lesson Plan
- Relevant Standards= (CCSS.ELA-RF. 1. 2.), (CCSS.ELA-RL. 4.2 )
The attached artifact highlights my English/ Language Arts knowledge by focusing on a read aloud, creating a space for students to announce rhyming words, and to produce mathematical events in relation to reading. The focus of rhyming words as well as numbers allowed me to be effective with the time I had in class as blending these two subject areas created more time for other lessons in the class to be taught. I may revise this next time to be more focused on a writing lesson that led into them creating a list of rhyming words.
2. Mathematics
- Statistics & Probability Conduction with Random Sample Presentation - Collaborative Lesson Plan
- Relevant Standards = (CCSS. MATH. 1. S-IC. 1)
This artifact displays my knowledge on the Mathematics content area as I pieced together a statistical question, conducted a survey froma. random sample, and was able to share and explain my findings to other peers in a put together presentation. To revise this to make it a lesson for my future students, I would have them conduct their own survey of something they want to know about and ask the people around their community and family. This would allow me to further my teachings to my students. ** ( Lesson was taught and created collaboratively)
3. Science
- Understanding the Structure of DNA and fingerprinting presentation - Independently Created
- Relevant Standards (NGSS. HS-LS1-1.)
This artifact shows my ability to conduct scientific research, develop conclusions, and create a presentation to share with peers. I was able to express my knowledge on DNA structures and fingerprinting. This allowed me to introduce new concepts to my classmates who did not know much about the topic. If I were presenting to a group of students in my classroom, I would revise this by making actual models out of materials that they can find at home to encourage them to create their own DNA structure model so that they understand each part of the structure.
4. Social Science
- Aztec Human Sacrifice Lesson Plan - Created and Presented Collaboratively
- Relevant Standards ( CCSS. HSS.7.7.3)
This lesson plan highlights my ability to teach about the past Aztec tribes culture of human sacrifice. With this lesson I was able to lead an opening discussion activity about what students already knew about the topic and what they wanted to know about it. Also, I taught the topic in a fun engaging way providing classroom participation time and a Kahoot online activity afterward to test the students knowledge. In revising this lesson, I would make the lecture part a bit more summarized so that my students understand the main takeaways and not be flooded with knowledge of useless information.
5. Visual & Performing Arts
- Art Color Wheel - Independantly Created
- Relevant Standards = (CCSS.7.VA:Cr2.3)
This color wheel activity demonstrated my creativity in organization of art as well as how colors are used in each other to combine and make many other colors. This shows my knowledge in creating and performing an artistic piece that children could be able to create as they learn their colors. To revise this activity for future students, I will have my students make their own color wheel, but I will mix the colors before hand so that they do not get confused on which colors to mix.
6. Physical Education
- Catching, Throwing (Ball Handling) - Individual lesson plan
- Relevant Standards = (SHAPE America. (2013). National Standards for K-12 Physical Education)
This artifact shows my knowledge on the Physical Education area because I was able to construct and present an entire lesson on ball handling through the focus on locomotor skills, nonlocomotive skills, psychomotor development and cognitive development. This lesson allowed for students to focus on balance and hand-eye- coordination. If I were to do this again, I would allow the students to throw the balls a bit further so that they can be aware of their own strength.
