Substance Abuse and Detoxing Unit: The Unit was called New Vision. We had Intake employees that would assess the patients and bring them to us. We would do the admissions, administered medications, monitoring them very closely while they were detoxing. They would stay 4 days to finish the detoxing, but often, patients could stay and we would discharge them. I was getting as much education that my supervisor would offer me. ACLS/PALS, Notary for the hospital, becoming a S.A.N.E Nurse. With that Knowledge, I was able to go to the ER after they closed our unit and went to DePaul Hospital.
Staff PRE-OP Nurse:
Prepared patients for surgery from the ambulatory surgery unit and bring patients down from the other floors in the hospital. We prepared patients for CABG, ortho, neuro, back, urology, plastic surgery, ETC.
WE were responsible for obtaining the consent, starting IVs, administering IV fluids, oxygen if needed, do and monitor vitals, making sure current labs are in the chart, if not, we would obtain them and send to the lab. we were responsible for the surgeon had an H & P in the chart before patient could go back for surgery. we would document on flow sheet that the patient did not have anything on except the gown. we worked with the surgeons, operating nurses, anesthesiologists, pharmacy, staff in the hospital, laboratory ,housekeeping, operating techs, and pre-op techs. And most importantly, was to relieve anxiety answer all questions by the patient and family members. Comfort was giving our patients warmed blankets. We documented in EPIC software. I loved helping whoever needed it, especially, our patients.
