G W Floyd Elementary School
4th grade Math Teacher
Ronald Reagan once said “We are not merely marking time….we are making a difference.” I was born on the 4th of July to Mr. and Mrs. Orville Tow. My dad was a Goodyear man and my mom a teacher for the Gadsden City School System. I have four brothers and one sister. We were all raised in Gadsden, Al and went to school at St. James Catholic. We were a blessed family. All of us would not have had such a successful life if it were not for my parents whom I cherish so much.
I finished high school at 17 and attended Troy State University on a scholarship. I finished my degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at Jacksonville State University and a Master’s Degree at the University of Alabama.
I am married with two children , a daughter who graduated from Jacksonville State University and a Marching Southern Ballerina, a son who graduated from Auburn University and earned a Master’s Degree. I have a grandson who is in college and working full time.
I first started working with Even Start, a program Charlotte Campbell cherished. I transferred to Striplin Elementary as a Computer Specialist and then to G W Floyd Elementary school ending my 29 years of teaching as a fourth grade Math teacher.
My husband, Jeff Wright, a retired Captain with the Gadsden Police Department, has worked on many projects with me and the educational programs at the schools I taught.
I want to thank everyone in this room and any child or teacher I have taught or worked with for your friendship, your knowledge and understanding. I want to end on something my dad always said to me when I was crying about my life and what to do , “ Do you want to be where you are right now, or in a few years teaching and helping others.” I wished my dad were here to see this, but mom is and she too stood right with my dad.
Thank you!
