Summary

An experienced biochemist looking to transition his skills into genetic counseling. Some of my research explored the biochemical effects of deleterious mutations which cause neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS. I wondered how people with the knowledge they possess these mutations must cope. I wish to help such people through a career that will allow me to explain the effects of deleterious mutations and how available therapeutics can treat them.

Work History

Lab Manager

Case Western Reserve University
06.2017 - Current
  • Wrote review articles, lab protocols, and grant supplements
  • Conducted analysis of cancer-causing mutations for hnRNP A1, mapping out the mutations to elucidate structural or functional effects
  • Trained newcomers to the lab and led lab meetings
  • Utilized molecular modeling software to examine SAXS envelopes of disordered protein domains.

Senior Research Associate

Case Western Reserve University
06.2012 - 05.2017
  • Perfected purification of hnRNP A1 with disordered domain to keep protein soluble
  • Examined effects of deleterious mutations in the C-terminal domain of hnRNP A1 by studying alterations to stress granule assembly and protein fibrilization
  • Developed fluorine NMR procedures for examining interactions by hnRNP A1.

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Miami University
01.2010 - 05.2012
  • Initiated projects that examined the properties of HIV and EV71 RNA genomic elements
  • Analyzed NMR data to study the binding of hnRNP A1 to RNA
  • Developed protocols for segmental isotope labeling of RNA and RNA study by EPR.

Post-Doctoral Fellow

University of Cincinnati
01.2007 - 01.2010
  • Examined the binding between troponin C and troponin I cardiac N-extension
  • Constructed and cloned gene of troponin I: troponin C chimera
  • Utilized molecular modeling software to evaluate protein structures.

Graduate Research Assistant

The Ohio State University
06.2002 - 12.2006
  • Utilized steady-state kinetics to examine the structure-function relationship of LysRS
  • Developed purification procedures for archaeal and bacterial proteins and tRNA
  • Reviewed and evaluated journal manuscripts
  • Oversaw lab’s compliance with radiation rules and regulations.
