One of two residents at Hawai‘i’s only Level 1 trauma center, training within an interdisciplinary hospital network of 40+ attending dentists across multiple specialties.
Participate in 14 days/month of hospital call, independently managing dental and facial trauma through splinting and acute stabilization, as well as odontogenic infections requiring incision and drainage, suture placement, and penrose drain management; assist OMFS in emergent extraoral infection and trauma cases in the operating room
Provide comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia four times per month for special health care needs and pediatric patients unable to tolerate treatment in a traditional clinical setting due to medical or behavioral complexity
Coordinate interdisciplinary care with oncology, transplant, anesthesia, and surgical teams; complete and execute pre-procedural dental clearance and definitive treatment to optimize patients prior to systemic therapy
Work closely with the Head & Neck Oncology service, assisting during oral cancer resections and reconstructive procedures (including radial forearm and fibula free flap cases), gaining exposure to surgical planning and functional implications of maxillofacial reconstruction
Independently treatment plan and execute endodontic therapy within a hospital-based model, utilizing CBCT for diagnosis and retreatment planning while sequencing care appropriately around systemic considerations
Present quarterly literature reviews and complex treatment planning cases to 40+ attending dentists and hospital providers for continuing education credit, reinforcing evidence-based decision-making and interdisciplinary dialogue
