  • Interviews customers in person and/or on the phone to assist them in the completion of application and declaration forms upon which eligibility decisions are based; elicits information from customers on parental status, income, property (real and personal), financial obligations, medical condition, and other resources.
  • Works with customers from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds who may have mental health problems or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and who are frequently in crisis. Determines customer needs, including immediate issues, by listening to them, by observing their behavior, and/or observing behavior between family members and works with customer to resolve issues. Builds rapport with and responds to inquiries from customers.
  • Interprets and explains basic and complex regulations, rules, court orders, programs and policies to customers and the general public; apprises customers of their rights, responsibilities and eligibility for program participation.
  • Reviews application documents for completeness and consistency; interprets and applies eligibility rules and regulations, along with agency policies, to appropriately determine eligibility and benefit levels.
  • Reviews additional or updated information and monitors cases for the purposes of re-determination, over-issuance, budgeting errors and/or overpayments in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Identifies issues that require referrals and refers customers as appropriate to other county and community resources, such as mental health counselors, child care, domestic abuse, homeless/housing support programs, etc. Prepares customers to meet with referrals, making sure they have the required information.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and complete case records; documents chronological record of case contacts in a timely and accurate manner so that others can determine information reported and/or actions taken.
  • Looks for evidence of possible fraud in cases and submits referrals to the fraud unit when warranted.
