My name is Jennifer, and I have always had a tremendous fascination with plants and nature. My Mother and Grandmother gardened, but I didn’t get interested in it until college. I had read The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tomkins and I was truly changed by the book. After studying horticulture in Charleston, SC, and with glowing recommendations from my instructors, I was able to secure an internship at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York. The internship opened the door to employment with the City of New York in the parks and recreation department. I joined a team of knowledgeable gardeners and landscape designers tasked with the restoration project of Fort Tryon park in Manhattan. After the project was complete, I moved back to Charleston and continued my love of gardening at Hampton Park where I was the lead Horticulturist and volunteer coordinator in Charleston’s most beloved park. When not working on the grounds, I also started seeds and propagated plants in the greenhouse. In 2011, I had the opportunity to run an iconic cafe in downtown Charleston, Gaulart and Maliclet French Cafe, But all the while maintained my consulting work for private gardens with a focus on sustainability, particularly on Sullivans Island. 2023 brings the desire to return to my love of bringing the beauty of horticulture to my community. The Naval Base is a location, that I have often thought of as a great opportunity for horticultural development as I’ve been a steward of three Fredrick Olmsted-designed Parks and have a real affinity for his vision.
