Clinical Observatory in Surgical Oncology

  • Acting as a 3rd year medical student in Surgical Oncology Clinic, reviewing patient’s medical record prior to encounter, obtaining a history physical exam, and presenting to the attending
  • Became familiar with medical guidelines for cancer screening and surveillance and provided patient education
  • Helped prepare the Procedure Room for Ultrasound guided fine needle biopsies, core biopsies, and aspirations of the thyroid gland, lymph nodes, and breast
  • Performed post-operative clinic follow-up exams including wound checks and JP drainage removals
  • Observed and assisted in several oncological surgeries in the OR including (but not limited to) total and partial mastectomies, DIEP Flap Breast reconstruction, APR, total and partial thyroidectomies, parathyroidectomies, adrenalectomies, and nephrectomies
  • Was able to follow-up with patient pre-operatively and post-operatively in the PACU, and in clinic, allowing for meaningful patient relationships and impactful experience
  • Continue to return on off-days and free time.

Learner Ambassador Program, UIWSOM, 2021 - current 

  • As a Learner Ambassador, I helped inform and educate prospective students about UIWSOM. I provided tours of campus, attended outreach events, served as a liaison between Admissions and the student body, participated in Interviews and Q&A sessions of prospective students; acquiring valuable insights into the essence of leadership and the importance of setting positive examples as a role model, fostering an open and safe sense of community.

COMC Clinic, medical student volunteer      Fall 2023 - current 

Medical Student Volunteer at Center for Osteopathic Medical Care, COMC Clinic, hosted by UIWSOM, is a free OMT clinic run by medical students under the mentorship and supervision of an attending physician. Students conduct a detailed history and physical, present their synopsis, assessment and plan including performing OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) in clinic. A handful of patients would return regularly, offering students to experience the value in providing continuity of care.

Amigos En Medicina Clinic, AEM clinic,     Spring 2022 - current

  • hosted by UIWSOM, provides free knee and hip evaluations and follow-up visits in Southside San Antonio to provide attainable care to residents in need, nourish patient education, and build trust between the underserved, Spanish-speaking residents and the healthcare system. A medical student is personally paired with a patient for their encounter to enable a sense of welcoming, trust, and compassion. Participated in several clinics throughout medical school thus far; Welcomed patients, assisted in filling out check-in paperwork; Personally translated throughout the entire encounter for the Spanish-speaking patient; Reiterated patient plan, education, physical therapy exercises, and follow-up plan.

Outreach Medicine, Street Medicine,   Fall 2021 - current

  • Outreach Medicine provides free Street Medicine Rounds to the homeless population of San Antonio by holding vaccine drives, 5k runs, and doing street rounds: Vaccine Drives - Aided in administering free influenza and COVID vaccines during several pop-up clinics in underserved areas; Street2Feet 5k - Provided First aid and OMM (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine) to the participants.
