  • Assume responsibility for the office in the absence of the General Registrar
  • Maintains voting equipment database
  • Maintains departmental budget and all departmental statistical data
  • Registers voters in person; received and reviews voter registration applications, evaluates qualifications of voters as determined by law; processes all applications, including applications from other localities; transfers non-resident applications to proper localities
  • Refers incomplete voter registration applications to the General Registrar. Prepares denial letters and voter cards for mailing.
  • Reviews, maintains and updates voter registration records, removes records of all convicted felons, deceased persons, those who no longer live in the county, etc. Updates Records: Name, Address changes, documents into Veris (Virginia Election Registration Information System) for updates.
  • Notifies voters who are ineligible to vote.

  • Maintains all office files according to law; prepares records retention schedule and destroys records following the required retention period.

  • Prepares Absentee Ballot Kits. Able to accept and review absentee ballot applications by mail and in person. Certifies registration of applications and mail ballots and provides in person absentee voting, all in accordance with Virginia State Election Law.
  • Assists political candidates filing for office. Review and verify petitions.
  • Assists in preparing departmental budget; assists with the preparation of educational programs, news releases and public notices
