Oliver, my Golden Retriever, is a part of my school community where he accompanies me to school every 'Waggy Wednesday'. Wednesdays are everyone's favorite day of the week- teachers, staff, and students. Research shows that the presence of a pet therapy animal can help a person control anxiety, regulate emotional arousals, and improve mood. Petting an animal promotes the release of hormones, such as serotonin and oxytocin that play a role in elevating moods. Using a therapy dog in the school settings creates a nonjudmental form of interaction that can motivate and encourage students. This can break communication barriers as well as create connections with students which can lead to heightened academic performances and better management of emotions, like stress, anger, and anxiety.
