- Receives reports of death from hospital personnel, physicians, law enforcement agencies, and other persons to determine whether the death falls within the legal jurisdiction of the Coroner.
- Conducts scene investigation to determine if death is due to homicide, suicide, accident, or natural manner.
- Interview witnesses, friends, or relatives to gain information about the decedent and circumstances surrounding the death or other related matters.
- Collects and secures personal property. Secure physical and pathological evidence such as clothing, weapons, bodily fluids, gun shot residue, and fingernail clippings.
- Photograph the scene of death and physical evidence. Fingerprints decedents, verify the decedent's identity and notify legal next of kin regarding death.
- Speaks to physicians and other personnel regarding the decedent’s medical history, requests, and checks medical records, or other records to gather information to establish the cause of death and/or identity of the decedent.
- Write death reports and subject to testify in court.
