- Operating a robotic friction stir welding machine.
- Daily tasks such as welding, prepping, and inspecting the barrel for any flaws or imperfections before and after capturing the barrel.
- I would have to rig up the barrel to an overhead crane and carefully fly it to my area. Then, I would receive the barrel into a cradle and lock it in place to the fixture and machine.
- Before welding the two halves of the barrels, we would have to prep the rocket's weld seam inside and out.
- After passing inspection, we would proceed to plunge into the two barrels at the mating seams and rotate the barrel while a high-speed friction stir welding bit would get the materials hot enough to stir the two metals together.
- Once welding was complete, I would have to hand blend the weld seam and proceed to be inspected and tested with ultrasonic current.
- After going through a week-long course of written testing and blending materials to a certain thickness, with only being allowed so many strokes of the sander per thickness.
- SpaceX has taught me to take my work a lot more seriously, and I'm very proud to say I have helped build 3 Falcon 9 Rockets that have successfully made it to their destination in space.
