  • Over the past 13 years I have worked as a Senior Field Safety Specialist in the Corporate Safety Department and in Power Generation supporting the Southern Area Hydro LOB, working to detect, prevent, and mitigate safety and health risks
  • Review, assess and identify safety and health program effectiveness and design/implement improvements
  • Partner with departments to assess and rank risks, conduct incident investigations, develop, and assess safety and health action plans, develop metrics and evaluate their effectiveness.

  • Variety of repairs performed throughout a three-mile tunnel
  • The repairs involved not only the installation of three separate sections requiring Full Shotcrete Liners totaling over 300 L.F., but it also included over 1,125 spot repairs and 6027 L.F
  • Of circumferential crack repairs
  • Injection grouting was performed behind all newly installed liners to fill voids and stabilize the ground behind the liners
  • Chemical grouting was performed to stop and slow the loss and seepage of water from the tunnel.

  • During SSJID’s annual water maintenance shutdown, Beck's Enterprises completed tunnel repairs using rockbolts and shotcrete with fiber reinforcement
  • A new shotcrete liner was placed throughout the Ram Tunnel using over 1000 yards of dry mix shotcrete containing fiber.

  • The Kern River Tunnel supplies water to a Hydro Electricity Plant for Southern California Edison
  • The Kern River Tunnel is approximately 100 years old, and many of the concrete lined sections have failed
  • The Tunnel length runs over 8 miles and is separated into 19 different Tunnel locations from T-1 to T-19
  • The Tunnel in its smallest section is 8ft
  • By 8ft

  • The first phase of work focused on repairs in T-18, repairing the Invert, Replacing Walls, and Repairing Walls at various locations
  • Ring Steel Sets were used to support the cap and ensure the safety of the personnel while these repairs were made
  • The main access point for the personnel was at Stark Flume between T-11 and T-12
  • The Flume wall had to be removed to gain access for personnel, equipment & material
  • A ramp and work platform were constructed for the staging of equipment and materials and access to the Stark Flume entrance
  • The traveling distance for the personnel, equipment & material from the Stark Flume access point to the work area in T-18 was approximately 3.5 miles
  • Man, trips were used to tram the personnel, equipment & material to the work area in T-18.

  • Beck's Enterprises and Sancon Engineering teamed up to repair and enlarge the deteriorating tunnel
  • The only access point for mobilizing the project is by landing a barge
  • All debris generated from the tunnel was removed from the project by a barge
  • The tunnel houses a sewer line that serves South Laguna and North Dana Point
  • The section of tunnel undergoing repairs extends 800 feet down the coast from the Thousand Steps stairway
  • The interior of the tunnel, which is deteriorating and caving in on top of the wood sets, will be enlarged and reinforced
  • The pipeline was encased in concrete for protection while the tunnel was under construction.

  • The work involves removing and replacing deteriorated wood sets, retimbering supports, then cordalane lag the area with treated lumber back to original line & grade.
