I have one patient that I care for full time, she suffers from spina bifida and has a TBI. I am responsible for all of her daily cares, OT and PT practice, managing her medications, making and taking her to all appointments, promoting her independence, keeping things tidy in her space and working closely with her parents, teachers, and doctors to ensure she is as healthy as can be mentally, emotionally, and physically.
I cared specifically for neonatal to 18 year old patients with complex heart conditions. I was responsible for collaborating with several nurses at a time to care for up to 8 infants and children at a time. I worked both day and night shifts where I would bathe, feed, hold, console, transport, transfer, admit, discharge and sometimes, code them. I learned specialized skills to care for children on certain precautions, assistive heart devices, and hazardous drugs. I worked closely with their families and enhanced patient satisfaction by providing compassionate and attentive care.
I assisted patients with complex neurological problems and worked directly under a registered nurse to rehabilitate them. I was trained specifically to rehabilitate patients who have suffered a stroke, had a traumatic brain injury or severe spinal cord injury. I was assigned 12 to 15 completely dependent patients at a time, on both day and night shifts. I did vitals, fed, showered, transferred, catheterized and kept their rooms pristine while simultaneously providing comfort during their newfound difficult time.
I first dedicated my efforts to assisting special needs children at a hospital located in a very rural area. Working with the minimal staff, I administered medications, and attended to their daily needs such as feeding, bathing, changing, and assisting with transfers. I also cared for elderly patients in their homes, where I administered medications, monitored their vital signs, facilitated activities of daily living (ADLs), and conducted assessments. Collaborating with other volunteers and locals, we used our collective knowledge and skills to offer comfort and care to those in need.
As a CNA at this nonprofit medical clinic, I work with other MA's, CNA's, MD's, PA's, and interpreters to provide care to underserved, uninsured and underprivileged members of my community. Patients are usually unable to speak English, so I work closely with interpreters or use the Spanish I have been taught. I check patients in, take their vitals, learn family, medical and mental health history, perform an assessment and document it all. I report to the PA or MD in office and we come up with a treatment plan for them, which often requires additional testing or referring/transferring of care.
PA Shadow Experience: Kauai, Hawaii - March 2024
I observed a range of patient interactions, the documentation of clinical encounters, the insurance process, medication, tests and specialty orders, as well as assisted with diagnostic procedures and treatment planning. I was responsible for learning from how Kaitlyn worked with her team to provide the best level of care possible for each patient.
Unit Health Coordinator: Murray, Utah - April 2019 to April 2022
I was responsible for making patient appointments, keeping the entire unit organized, answering the phone, keeping up relations with Doctors, nurses, liaisons and family members and responsible for admits and discharge work. During this time I was responsible for training other people for this same position as well as training them to work on the unit as a CNA.
