- Contact patients prior to surgery date and obtain a thorough medical and surgical history.
- Work closely with anesthesiologist to determine if patient is a good candidate for an outpatient facility and what, if any, pre-op work needs to be done.
- Retrieve and review labs, EKG, chest x-ray and clearance.
- Upon admit- assess patients, initiate IV access, obtain vital signs, Accu checks and administer preop medications, if ordered.
- Inform patient and family members of what to expect after surgery.
- Assist Anesthesiologist with nerve blocks using ultrasound guidance and sterile technique.
- On admission into PACU- closely monitor vital signs and administer medications including: antihypertensives, narcotics, anti-emetics, insulin and nebulizing treatments.
- Discharge instructions and teaching to patient and family member about home medication, diet, activity and signs of things that would be emergent.
