• 07/26/24, On June 17, 2024, Dispatchers Jhoanna Veliz and her partner received a frantic call from a father whose son was suicidal and driving to a family farm in another county. Using real-time updates from the family’s Life 360 app, Jhoanna and her partner immediately issued a BOLO and coordinated with five different counties to track the son's movements. Despite the challenging task of managing multiple calls and jurisdictions, their dedication and quick thinking resulted in a peaceful resolution and the son receiving the care he needed.
• 09/18/24, During a severe thunderstorm with high winds, she single-handedly managed dispatch operations. Despite numerous trees down on power lines, roads blocked, and two major traffic lights malfunctioning, she excelled in dispatching units to the necessary locations, making crucial notifications, and handling multiple phone calls. In addition to the weather-related incidents, the subsequent traffic issues led to multiple accidents, including four on Highway 278 and one on Lamar, all within a two hour timeframe. She expertly prioritized calls, coordinated the response of EMS and wreckers, and ensured her officers’ needs were met while continuing to handle routine Thursday afternoon calls. Her dedication, professionalism and positive attitude, even during such a demanding period, were truly commendable, she exemplified the highest standards of dispatch work, and her efforts did not go unnoticed.
