Using American Sign Language, conducted school based assessments to accurately diagnose whether or not speech and written language communication services would be of benefit to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from ages 3 years to 12 years of age, including Autistic DHH students.
Educated families on strategies for supporting their child's communication at home with explaining the crucial importance of the family learning and using sign language to communicate with their child in order to develop a rich language base for communication.
Through IEP meetings, collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive speech and language goals addressing the unique needs of each Deaf and Hard of Hearing child.
Created IEP goals for a wide range of students with minimal, moderate to severe hearing loss through personalized speech goals and consistent progress monitoring.
Provided early intervention services to young hard of hearing children, resulting in improved speech and/or emerging language development.
Created innovative therapy models for developing functional speech including developing a "Communication Village" that effectively targeted each student's specific areas of difficulty and connected their expressive and receptive communication goals including: speech articulation, speech reading, sign language, written language and pragmatics. In this paradigm, students were highly motivated and had lots of fun in the process, which I believe is a key to success.
Optimized treatment outcomes by staying current on evidence-based practices related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students related to communication and incorporating new strategies into therapy sessions.
Improved student's communication skills by implementing an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) tailored to their specific communicative need .
Adapted speech therapy techniques to include visual models of phoneme production, and visual explanations for English grammar rules effective for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
