Hospital volunteer: As a hospital volunteer, I supported staff by refilling supply carts, restocking closets, and providing comfort items to patients. Having been hospitalized myself, I originally volunteered at the hospital to give back. However, I ultimately gained key insight into hospital dynamics. I saw how demanding the environment was for both nurses and physicians. Furthermore, I realized the importance of clear communication and interprofessional collaboration in delivering the best care possible to the numerous patients they were responsible for.
Kappa Delta: While a member of Kappa Delta, I participated in philanthropy events benefiting Girl Scouts and Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). I also assisted in organizing various fundraisers such as Pancakes for PCAA, bingo nights, and game nights. One of my favorite memories was leading a Zumba class, where initial hesitation turned into laughter, encouragement, and confidence. These experiences taught me how small efforts can make meaningful impacts on a community. They also helped my self-confidence evolve through public speaking, organizing events, and empowering my peers and community.
Research: Over three semesters, I studied homologous recombination and end joining. Laboratory techniques that I utilized included gel electrophoresis, PCR, restriction digests, cell counts, and tissue media preparation. Presenting at Dr. Richardon’s lab meetings challenged me to communicate complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences. Furthermore, this longitudinal research experience strengthened my resilience, deepened my appreciation for molecular science, and reinforced the importance of persistence in scientific inquiry
