My name is John Davis, and I am a graduating senior from the University of South Alabama with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. My number one goal is to always give back to the village that built me to the point I am presently at. I have 50+ shadowing hours, as well as hundreds of hours in volunteer work. I am a through believer in keeping God first, and everything else is already written!
As a tutor, I have learned effective communication, tailoring each learning experience to each individual. I prepare students for standardized tests through achievement-focused activities and character-building elements integrated into K-12 and college curriculums. In doing so, I have learned how to effectively communicate with students, providing them with the motivation and mentorship I longed for at their age. With aspirations of becoming a dentist, it is crucial that I am able to connect to patients and educate them on treatments and plans.
The University of South Alabama's Collegiate 100 Chapter promotes brotherhood, community service, and mentoring. It empowers African American men to develop leadership skills while supporting the local 100 Black Men Chapter in programs that foster youth development and provide positive role models. We have participated in numerous charity events including campus cleanups, community outreach programs such as Mental Awareness Workshops and Wellness walks, and voter registration.
As a member, we unite college men of high ideals in scholarship and manhood, to uplift ambitions, promote perseverance, and contribute to political and social progress. Serving as Vice-Baseilus of my chapter, I have coordinated and led numerous community service initiatives such as Manhood Monday, Big Brother Leadership program, and helping numerous Boys & Girls Clubs in the greater Mobile area. I have also won highest Chapter GPA of my chapter and been nominated for Omega Man of the Year.
As a member of my school's NSBE organization, I have been able to surround myself with like-minded individuals who have similar goals and aspirations. We have held numerous fundraisers and I have been able to meet many people who have served as mentors for me throughout my college journey.
I was able to gain knowledge on the dental school admission process and curriculum. Throughout the program I networked with current students and faculty, learning about how one can best present themselves while attempting to gain admission, as well as gaining insight on the day-to-day experience of a dental student. This experience was especially beneficial for me because I have been navigating this process without much guidance, as I am the first person in my family to be pursuing post-graduate education.
Spent time shadowing Dr. Chung Kau at UAB, learning about some of his day-to-day life as an orthodontist. I was able to assist him in various observations and learn more about the overall field of dentistry.
