I was responsible for removing crates from the conveyor line, inspecting them for structural integrity and cleanliness, and then transferring them to their designated spots for retrieval by tuggers. I was also the crew trainer responsible for training new hires on safety protocols, and any other relevant training. I consistently adhered to proper PPE protocols and safety practices, ensuring the efficient operation within a fast-paced and potentially hazardous environment, while maintaining a safe workspace at all times.

  • Worked successfully with diverse group of coworkers to accomplish goals and address issues related to our products and services.
  • Maintained updated knowledge through continuing education and advanced training.
  • Provided support and guidance to colleagues to maintain a collaborative work environment.
  • Barrel Construction: Coopers start by selecting and preparing high-quality oak staves (the long pieces of wood that form the barrel). They arrange the staves into a circular shape, ensuring a tight fit to create a watertight seal. Using traditional tools like mallets, hammers, and metal hoops, they secure the staves together to form the barrel structure.
  • Shaping and Fitting: The cooper shapes the barrel by steam-bending the wood to achieve the desired curvature. They carefully fit the barrel’s head (the circular ends) and ensure that the entire structure is sealed and properly aligned.
  • Toasting or Charring: In whiskey barrel factories, the cooper may also perform the toasting or charring of the interior of the barrel. This process is essential for influencing the flavor profile of the whiskey, as the heat from the charring process caramelizes the sugars in the wood and creates a desirable charred layer.
  • Repairs and Maintenance: Coopers are also responsible for repairing damaged barrels, such as fixing leaks or replacing broken staves. They often inspect and maintain the barrels throughout their use, ensuring they continue to function properly during the aging process.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring that the barrels meet the high-quality standards required for aging whiskey is an important part of the cooper's role. This includes checking the integrity of the wood, inspecting for leaks, and confirming that each barrel is appropriately constructed for storing whiskey.
  • Safety and Compliance: Coopers work with sharp tools and heavy materials, so they must adhere to strict safety protocols to prevent accidents. They also ensure their work complies with industry standards for alcohol aging and barrel construction.
