Work History
Pr. Chemical Engineer/Chemist
Sparton Corporation, Elbit Corp. subsidiary
12.1998 - 12.2024
Developed or identified specific epoxy and polyurethane potting and encapsulant formulations of all types and chemistries for use by the US Navy Anti-Submarine Warfare Division.
Sparton Corporation is a Naval Defense Contractor involved in Anti-submarine Warefare (ASW). They are currently a subsidiary of Elbit Corporation of America. Their primary products are Sonobuoys. Sonobuoys are undersea acoustic sensors that utilize piezo-electric acoustic sensors such that when submerged, can detect specific frequencies of sound indicative of enemy submarines. The sensors must be encapsulated in a polyurethane or epoxy compound to not only provide electrical insulation, but the chemistry needs to be designed such that it provides acoustic transparency or invisibility to the frequencies the sensor is trying to detect.
In addition, the material typically had to have a Shore Durometer hardness that is resistant to change over a prescribed temperature range, and rheological concerns must also meet prescribed limits of stability.
These types of compounds can rarely be bought off-the-shelf from distributors. They typically required an intimate knowledge of 100's of raw materials, combined with the expertise to use them correctly in a given application, and frequently the ingenuity to create new raw materials that otherwise don't already exist. I have been fascinated with developing new and different thermoset systems for 4 decades. Over the years I've established working relationships with the Chemists and management of several major suppliers, typically the individuals that share my enthusiasm.
Designed Process Flow Diagram (PFD) and Process and Instrument Drawing (P&ID) for corporate training manuals.
POLYMER CHEMIST
Biwax Corporation
08.1995 - 10.1998
Demonstrated attention to detail while measuring out precise quantities of raw materials, ensuring successful batch outcomes.
Communicated with clients regarding complex job orders to maximize clarity and work instructions.
Exceeded production goals by implementing process improvements and streamlining workflow efficiency within the compounding department.
Staff Chemist
Sparton Defense Electronics-Div. of Elbit Corp.
06.1989 - 03.1995
Performed technical laboratory functions in compliance with regulatory agencies and safety requirements.
Established quality control measures for instrumentation and monitored data quality to operate instrument with control limits.
Enhanced product quality by developing and optimizing chemical processes and procedures.
Coordinated and performed analytical tests to comply with established standards and specifications.
Jr. Tire Compounder
Firestone Tire & Rubber Co.
