Valley Day Family Reunion, Co-Founder, Bronx, NY, USA, 1969, Present, VALLEY DAY -NOW THE “VALLEY DAY FAMILY REUNION”, was initially started to remind us of all the GREAT TIMES we had when the weekend came, and the music came—outdoors—in the VALLEY (HAFFEN) PARK. But it’s much more than that. From the time the park was 1st opened back in 1969-70 and the HILLSIDE LITTLE LEAGUE took the field, the best of ‘the good ‘ol days’ was well on its way., I was 8 yrs old when I joined the league, won 3 out of 4 championships with my team “J-A-M” (still don’t remember what that meant) and was an ALL-STAR pitcher, catcher, line-drive hitting, base-stealing ‘phenom’ who batted around .400. After the games, in was ‘captain’ of the ‘clean-up crew’ that was responsible for maintaining and cleaning ‘the area’ once all games were completed. And because I lived closest to the park, I was also the equipment manager (well, mom and dad were but I took that ‘credit’). After my final season and moving on to Sandlot Baseball, I started my 1st year as a seasonal park worker in HAFFEN PARK. For the next 4 years I was the ‘seasonal parkie’ for both HAFFEN (VALLEY) PARK and SOUSA PARK (across form EDENWALD PROJECTS), Already a self-taught drummer and ‘trained’ guitarist, I rapidly developed a natural sense for arranging a playlist of songs that could be played back-to-back, all with similar tempo’s and most in the ‘same key’, giving me the ability to cover songs (as a drummer) continuously for various lengths of time (depending on ‘the show’). I used this same ability to put together mixed tapes that we’d used during intimation. The mixed tapes created more of a buzz than the band, creating a ‘new line of work’ for me. A career that started in 1975, has turned out to be one of NY’s top DJs, now in my 50th season. Playing at a club called The Palace in New Rochelle, NY., I slowly earned a position as primary (house) DJ and before long, acquired a second ‘primary location’ at a club called The Straight Back, located in Harlem, USA. From 1975-1980 weekend ‘park-jams’ were becoming more and more prevalent, and Haffen (Valley) Park was a PRIMARY location in the Bronx for most. Dangerous times ended that era of entertainment, until the 3rd Sunday in August of 1985. That marks the date of the 1st ANNUAL VALLEY DAY REUNION., Forming a small committee of 6 members, our 1st Valley Day Reunion was a HUGE success and it felt great ‘giving-back’ to the community I grew up in. It’s remained vibrant for 39 years, with me (Johnny G) being the last of the Original Valley Day Committee Members as we head towards our monumental 40th ANNUAL VALLEY DAY REUNION. Looking at better days ahead, I’ve ‘elevated’ the committee into an ‘official’ 501(3)C NON-FOR-PROFIT organization ready to fulfill more of the needs and ‘deeds’ that will benefit and enhance the quality of life for everyone in our communitymy ‘young ones’ being the primary!, The Values 4 Life (V4L) Foundation Inc. was officially est. in 2017 and I, Award Winning Mixmaster Johnny G of The Come Off Crew, am the CEO. Since its establishment and after a ‘consultation’ with, then park commissioner Ms. Rodriguez, we were able to agree on a ‘partial’ basketball court makeover, which allowed me to re-institute a summer basketball program for our ‘young ones’ 18yrs of age and under This meeting was also attended by Councilman Kevin Riley, strong supporter of the V4L Foundation. Once the ‘makeover’ was completed, I then had to MOVE all ‘drug activity’ (open sales) from the park and the areas surrounding the park. Respectfully, compliance was met, and tournament play in Valley (Haffen) Park was back ‘IN FULL EFFECT!’ I’ve been involved with all talks involving the TOTALPARK RENOVATION (which we are desperately waiting on), and once the renovation is completed, The Foundation has plans for ‘year-round’ activity for ‘young ones’ and Elders as well. In addition to my direct efforts involving the improvements in and around Haffen (Valley) Park, I’ve also:, Been a member of NYPD 47th Precinct Community Board for 20+ years and counting and strengthened community relations with the assist of, then precinct commander, Insp.
