Work History

Senior Lecturer in English

Kongju National University
03.2009 - 02.2023
  • Taught credited classes at the Department of English Language and Literature to undergraduate students, which included setting the syllabus, designing and developing appropriate teaching material, setting tests and grading criteria, and inputting and managing grades and related administration.
  • Employed diverse teaching approaches as classes involved multi-level and multi-national students (over 40 different nationalities took my classes during my 14 years there).
  • Developed and implemented new English language programs and courses which included setting syllabi, writing textbooks, hiring new teachers, and supervising and managing them, as well as liaising closely with a publishing company to publish the textbooks.
  • One mandatory program involved 3,300 freshmen across our three campuses and the hiring of 21 teachers to teach on it. This involved reading and assessing job applications, conducting interviews, assessing teaching demonstrations, observing teachers in class and holding workshops on how to teach the program.
  • Administratively liaised with various campus departments as regards program management, teacher feedback, student feedback, troubleshooting, evaluation, and finance.
  • Worked in an interdisciplinary manner to proofread numerous manuscripts for various professors at the university, for publication in English in international journals (none were ever rejected), and drafted or proofread MOU's and other paperwork for various departments; edited the student newspaper.
  • Wrote letters of recommendation for teachers and students and advised students on pursuing further education abroad, including on sources of funding and their applications.

Head English Instructor

Kongju National University
03.2008 - 02.2009
  • Taught non-credited English classes at the university's Institute for International Language Education (IILE) to university students, university professors, local business people, housewives, and middle and high school children.
  • Designed and developed appropriate teaching material, as well as managing summer and winter camps for elementary school and intensive language programs.
  • Had responsibility for the management and supervision of six other English teachers at the IILE and liaised with the institute's administration on all aspects of teaching there.
  • Taught a class of Korean professors for one year. These professors asked me to come teach in their department, the Department of English Language and Literature, which I did for the next 14 years.

English Lecturer

Chonnam National University
03.2005 - 06.2007
  • Taught both credited and non-credited classes at the university's Language Education Center (LEC), to university students, university professors, elementary and secondary level school teachers, secondary level students, and local business people.
  • Designed and developed various teaching material, particularly Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Public Speaking & Debating, and English through Drama classes for the provincial teacher-training program run for local elementary and secondary teachers.
  • Proofread the syllabus, textbook ,and workbook for a mandatory credited freshman program, which I also taught on. This helped me greatly later at Kongju National University when I was asked to develop and implement a similar program.
  • During one 7-week summer semester, I worked a 45-hour week (just teaching), and received a certificate of outstanding performance from the director of the LEC.
