I served on the USS Eisenhower, CVN-69, launching jets off catapult number one and performing other deck duties as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Launch & Recovery (ABE) Sailor.
Was tasked with the important job of launching Naval aircraft on the flight deck.
Was be responsible for operating and maintaining all aircraft launch equipment, which included:
Hydraulic and steam catapults
Barricades and water brakes
Jet blast deflectors and control panels
Deck-edge control stations
Most of the work was performed outdoors on aircraft carrier decks, in all climates and conditions, including hazardous environments.
The work was fast-paced and ABEs typically work closely with others in aviation ratings.
I received an honorable discharge from active duty as and Airman E-3 in 1993.
I continued in the inactive reserves until my final discharge in 1999.
