I would dig either by hand or by my operator to access pipes(sewer or water). building drains and building sewers would be cut out and removed where the damaged section is(terracotta, cast iron, pvc, etc) and would be repaired or rerouted. Water lines would be dug up to pressure test to find leaks and repair sections with approved couplings or pull a new line with a cable and spear.

I would hand dig from 3ft up to 12ft to access building drains, building sewers, house traps, etc. Basements, garages, driveways, or yards. Remove damaged section and repair or reroute depending on task given. removed any concrete and any excess dirt to allow proper bedding of pipe or to allow proper gravel base for concrete repairs. Mix and pour concrete to finish.
